Rudrapur: Ex-serviceman cheated of ₹6.69 lakh in the name of a 'senior citizen card'; fraudster posed as PNB head office employee on WhatsApp call, case registered against unknown person

An ex-serviceman living in the Gangapur area of Rudrapur has been cheated of ₹6.69 lakh in the name of getting a 'senior citizen card' made. According to Amar Ujala, he told the Transit Camp police that he has two savings accounts at the Haldwani branch of Punjab National Bank. On October 28, he got a WhatsApp call on his mobile from an unknown person who claimed to be an employee of PNB's head office in Mumbai and told him senior citizen cards were being made for elderly people. The fraudster also took his photo over an audio-video call, kept him engaged in conversation and on October 30 withdrew a total of ₹6.69 lakh from both accounts. When he discovered the fraud, he complained at the cyber crime police station in Rudrapur. CO Vibhav Saini said a case of cheating has been registered against an unknown person. The report does not say how the money was taken out. Do not share an OTP, PIN or account details on such calls made in a bank's name, check with your branch yourself, and if you are cheated call 1930 at once.
