Free legal aid

Under the law many people are entitled to a free advocate, court fees and help with paperwork. DLSA gives it from the District Court campus; at tehsil level there are Taluk Legal Services Committees (Kichha, Kashipur, Khatima, Bazpur, Sitarganj, Jaspur).

Who qualifies

  • Members of a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe
  • Victims of human trafficking or begar (forced labour)
  • A woman or a child
  • A mentally ill or otherwise disabled person
  • Victims of a mass disaster, ethnic violence, caste atrocity, flood, drought, earthquake or industrial disaster
  • Industrial workmen
  • Persons in custody (jail, protective home, psychiatric hospital)
  • Ex-servicemen
  • Persons from the transgender community
  • Senior citizens
  • Persons living with HIV/AIDS
  • Anyone whose annual income from all sources is below Rs 3,00,000

There is no income limit for the first 11 categories above.

How to apply

  • Go to the DLSA front office in the District Court campus, Rudrapur, or call 15100.
  • Give an application on plain paper: name, address, what the matter is, and the category you qualify under.
  • Bring an identity document and, for an income-based application, proof of income or an affidavit.
  • You can also apply online on the NALSA portal.
  • If the authority finds the case genuine, a panel advocate is provided free; Tele-Law gives video advice through Common Service Centres.
