How to get free legal aid
Women, children, SC/ST persons, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, industrial workmen, persons in custody and anyone earning under Rs 3 lakh a year are entitled to a free advocate. Help comes from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in the District Court campus, Rudrapur.
What to do
- Call 15100 (NALSA, toll-free) or 1800-180-4000 (Uttarakhand SLSA), or go to the DLSA front office.
- Give an application on plain paper or fill it online on the NALSA portal.
- Show proof of eligibility (identity document; for the income category, income proof or an affidavit).
- If the case is found genuine, a panel advocate is assigned; court fees and paperwork costs are borne by the authority.
- Small disputes can be settled by compromise in a Lok Adalat: no court fee, and the award is final.

- Identity document (Aadhaar, voter card)
- Income certificate or affidavit (income category)
- Case papers: notices, FIR, summons, earlier orders
