Consumer complaint: defective goods or poor service

For defective goods, wrong bills, deficient service or unfair trade practice, a complaint lies under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. Claims up to Rs 50 lakh go to the District Commission, up to Rs 2 crore to the State Commission. You can file without a lawyer.

What to do

  1. First complain to the seller or company in writing and keep a copy; also register on the National Consumer Helpline 1915, where many matters get settled.
  2. If unresolved, file a complaint with the District Consumer Commission, Udham Singh Nagar, or online on the e-Jagriti portal.
  3. File within two years of the cause of action.
  4. State clearly what happened, the loss, and the relief sought (refund, replacement, compensation).
  5. Attend the hearings yourself or through an advocate; if the order is not obeyed, an execution application can be made.

What to bring

  • Bill, receipt, warranty card, order and proof of payment
  • Complaint letters, e-mails, chats and the replies
  • Photos or video of the defect; identity document
