Naib Subedar Ramesh Singh Rawat of the Garhwal Rifles, who was posted in Siachen, has died of a brain haemorrhage. According to Amar Ujala, a blood clot formed in his brain because of the extreme cold during the posting. He was flown by Army helicopter to the Command Hospital, Chandigarh, where he had been under treatment for the past two months. His body was brought by Army vehicle to his home in Ekta Colony, Kashipur. On Thursday an Army contingent gave a salute at the cremation ground on Gange Baba Road and he was cremated with military honours. MLA Trilok Singh Cheema, Mayor Deepak Bali and hundreds of others were present. He was originally from Rikhnikhal in Pauri. He is survived by his parents, wife, son and daughter. Reports differ on his unit: Amar Ujala says the 16th and Hindustan says 11 Garhwal Rifles.
