RTI: Udham Singh Nagar accounts for 282 of 528 rape cases registered in Kumaon in a year and a half, district also leads in murder, vehicle theft and rioting cases

According to information that Kashipur RTI activist Nadeem Uddin received from the office of the Inspector General of Police, Kumaon, Udham Singh Nagar has the largest share of crimes registered in the Kumaon division over a year and a half (Dainik Bhaskar). In the district-wise details provided by public information officer Hem Chandra Sati, 282 (about 53%) of the division's 528 rape cases were registered in Udham Singh Nagar; Nainital is second with 145, while 34 cases were registered in Pithoragarh, 28 in Almora, 25 in Champawat and 14 in Bageshwar. In the first six months of 2026, 169 rape cases were registered. Of 102 murder cases, 56 were in Udham Singh Nagar and 27 in Nainital. Of 157 kidnapping cases, 139 involved women. Of 582 vehicle theft cases, 456 (about 78%), and of 473 rioting cases, 354 (about 75%), are from this district. According to Bhaskar, registered cases alone do not give a full picture of the real crime rate or of police efficiency; population, the nature of crimes, and the status of investigations and convictions also have to be considered.
