Protesting against the merchant discount rate (MDR) being applied to some merchant transactions made through UPI, the Rudrapur Vyapar Mandal has announced it will observe 'No UPI Day' on Gandhi Jayanti, Friday, October 2. The traders' body has appealed to traders not to accept payments through UPI that day and to customers to pay in cash or by card. Vyapar Mandal president Sanjay Juneja said, "We support Digital India and a cashless economy, but an additional financial burden on traders in the name of digital payments will not be accepted." According to him, extra payment costs could raise the cost of doing business and could also affect ordinary consumers. He demanded that the Centre reconsider the provision and asked traders to register their protest peacefully. Some shops may not accept UPI tomorrow and banks will also be closed for Gandhi Jayanti, so carry cash. (Source: Nav Bharat Media, used with permission)
