A state-level conference on human trafficking at the Gandhi Hall auditorium in Pantnagar discussed a joint strategy to curb everything from child kidnapping to inter-state human trafficking networks. Held under Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines, it was attended by 134 delegates in all: police officers from Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, along with central agencies, the armed forces, prosecution officers, child welfare committees and non-governmental organisations. Additional Director General of Police V. Murugeshan said curbing such organised crime needs strong coordination between agencies, vigilance in border areas, quick sharing of information and attention to the rehabilitation of victims. Haridwar police presented case studies of tracing a 13-year-old girl kidnapped from Bihar, with five accused arrested, and the safe recovery of a kidnapped four-month-old baby. Eleven police personnel were given commendation certificates for outstanding work. (Source: Amar Ujala)
